Maria of Sentir Cubano Calls Nevada Bob's Memoir the Story of a True American Hero

Image
In the heart of Miami's Little Havana there's a wonderful little store named Sentir Cubano. When Nevada Bob Gordon was in Miami this fall he discovered this hidden gem on Calle 8, a store dedicated to Cuban culture.  Nevada Bob met owner Maria Vazquez they hit it off famously. Maria described him as a true American hero. " Bob is part of the culture we present here in the store. Hard working, successful, positive people....  He's like an All-American Cowboy... He's an amazing person. It's commendable when you are 83 and still going,"  Vazquez said. Maria and Miguel Vazquez opened the store in 2001. "It was time to create a store dedicated to Cuban culture," she said. Thus was born Sentir Cubano. Maria shared some of her own story. "Our parents brought us here (to Miami) when we were kids, in 1960-61. As we were growing up we didn't fully appreciate our background. But when we became older we discovered afresh how rich our culture is. We...

Nevada Bob Now at the Silver Lotus in New Orleans

Image
Lily, co-owner of the Silver Lotus. This is Lily, who owns a great little record store in New Orleans, the Silver Lotus. She is selling Nevada Bob's  CD and book in tandem. If you were to check it out you might be surprised at how rare and most excellent her record collection is. It's no ordinary store. It's full of treasures including unique gifts, arts and jewelry. Indonesia-born Lily and her husband Brian Monk also own an equally special jewelry store one block away. After Lily graduated from college, she started working at a marketing/ad agency in town. "After a year the agency downsized, and people like me got axed." Lily said. "One way to deal with it was to start a business where I could never get axed again." "When something like that happens, a lot of people in the same industry are looking for openings. New Orleans is a small town, so we were competing in the same space." They started their business importing handmade items from Indon...

Nevada Bob Takes His Cancer Fight to Tijuana (Part 3)

Image
Reflecting. Photo: Gary Firstenberg This is an excerpt from Chapter 6 of Nevada Bob Gordon's 50 Years with the Wrong Woman . This is a continuation from Part 2 regarding Nevada Bob's "ailment," his euphemism for the C-word. You can read Part 2 Here . With a growing family and the American doctors essentially giving up hope, Bob Gordon decided to give "alternative medicine" a try. What follows is not intended as medical advice; it is simply the path Nevada Bob followed.  * * * I was not informed right away that I could be dead in six months. My  tumor was, in fact, malignant. When Carol had learned that the test  had revealed I had cancer, she met with her girlfriend Darlene Marley.  Darlene told me that Carol was sitting in our car with all of our children,  including the baby, and said to Darlene, “What am I going to do with  all these kids if Bob dies?” Carol was never one to exhibit emotional displays, but in that moment  she looked pretty forlorn. ...

The Verdict: Nevada Bob's Bout with Cancer (Part 2)

Image
This is a continuation of the story of Nevada Bob's battle to overcome cancer near 50 years ago. If you want to read part one first, here's the beginning of the story . Photo: Gary Firstenberg Bob Gordon's battle with cancer was interrupted by a near fatal accident in the sawmill he was operating at the time. A saw blade at the mill could have gutted him while he was filing its teeth, but only damaged his arm. It still required surgery and the family had to rally while he recovered in the hospital.  This is an excerpt from the chapter My Ailment in 50 Years with the Wrong Woman . In it he tells how he came to the decision he made. Monica returned home to take charge of the household at age 14, although my parents drove down from Seattle to assist the kids the next day. Carol was in for a rough time even still. She had a brand-new child, a husband who could soon die, and four more lively children to care for. We were forced to sell off all our cows because I was in the hospi...

Memoir of a Colorful Western Character: Early Reviews

Image
The early consensus is that Nevada Bob Gordon's newly released memoir, 50 Years with the Wrong Woman  is a real page-turner. Here are some of the early reviews that have been shared. Posted today on Amazon: Memoir of a Colorful Western Character This memoir is overflowing with insightful anecdotes about living life fully. The author is a jokester, badass, and gifted storyteller; he is also a singing cowboy with several CDs to his credit. The breadth of his 80 years of life experience (including 58 years of marriage) is awesome. His stories about working in the Seattle Police Force are particularly compelling. As the memoir progresses, it becomes more of a cowboy tale as he works on different ranches out West, continuing to engage in tomfoolery and new adventures. He and his family face numerous crises, most of which they miraculously survive and others that are tragic. This is a great book to read with a couple of beers – once you start it, you will find it hard to put down. * * *...

Another Nice Endorsement for Nevada Bob's Memoir

Image
Singer/songwriter Nevada Bob visited Hibbing in 2021. Photo: G Firstenberg Nevada Bob Gordon life has been quite the adventure. While working with Bob on his memoir 50 Years with the Wrong Woman , I heard him on more than one occasion say,  “I don’t mind dying. I was more afraid of not living.” That statement encapsulates much of who he is, and the stories he tells in his soon to be published memoir simply string together a lifetime memories to illustrate this creed. This past six months I've learned that there are a lot of people waiting for his stories to be available in print. Here's what another author had to say about Bob's life story. “Bob is a bona fide Western Cowboy! His book is the spellbinding story of a hard-working family devoted to God, hard work, resilience, exciting jobs, and new adventures. Supported by a beautiful wife, they tackle new opportunities with humor and gusto. I found it hard to put the book down while waiting to turn the page t...
