Nevada Bob Now at the Silver Lotus in New Orleans

Image
Lily, co-owner of the Silver Lotus. This is Lily, who owns a great little record store in New Orleans, the Silver Lotus. She is selling Nevada Bob's  CD and book in tandem. If you were to check it out you might be surprised at how rare and most excellent her record collection is. It's no ordinary store. It's full of treasures including unique gifts, arts and jewelry. Indonesia-born Lily and her husband Brian Monk also own an equally special jewelry store one block away. After Lily graduated from college, she started working at a marketing/ad agency in town. "After a year the agency downsized, and people like me got axed." Lily said. "One way to deal with it was to start a business where I could never get axed again." "When something like that happens, a lot of people in the same industry are looking for openings. New Orleans is a small town, so we were competing in the same space." They started their business importing handmade items from Indon

Nevada Bob Takes His Cancer Fight to Tijuana (Part 3)

Image
Reflecting. Photo: Gary Firstenberg This is an excerpt from Chapter 6 of Nevada Bob Gordon's 50 Years with the Wrong Woman . This is a continuation from Part 2 regarding Nevada Bob's "ailment," his euphemism for the C-word. You can read Part 2 Here . With a growing family and the American doctors essentially giving up hope, Bob Gordon decided to give "alternative medicine" a try. What follows is not intended as medical advice; it is simply the path Nevada Bob followed.  * * * I was not informed right away that I could be dead in six months. My  tumor was, in fact, malignant. When Carol had learned that the test  had revealed I had cancer, she met with her girlfriend Darlene Marley.  Darlene told me that Carol was sitting in our car with all of our children,  including the baby, and said to Darlene, “What am I going to do with  all these kids if Bob dies?” Carol was never one to exhibit emotional displays, but in that moment  she looked pretty forlorn. Little Willie John's Worst Career Move: An Incident from Nevada Bob's Police Days in Seattle

Photo credit: Gary Firstenberg Something very important in rock and roll history happened here in this house. Do you know the story of Little Willie John? I, like many teens who came of age in the Sixties, was unaware of how many of the pop singles we listened to had their origins in black R&B. The things we've learned in retrospect could fill volumes. There's a whole chapter devoted to this in David Halberstam's  The Fifties .  The McCoys' two big hits in 1965 were "Hang On Sloopy" and "Fever." I never knew that the song Fever had been first recorded by Little Willie John. In fact, it had been a #1 hit on the R&B charts in 1956. Over a five year period Little Willie had 13 songs reach the Top Ten on the R&B charts. He also had many regional hits including "Leave My Little Kitten Alone," of which The Beatles recorded five takes while recording Beatles For Sale  in August 1964. The song was very popular in the Northwest, which wa

Perfect Weather Accompanies Nevada Bob to Minnesota

Bob Gordon in front of Corktown, an  eating establishment in Duluth. Last week Bob Gordon arrived in Minnesota to record his memoir 50 Years with the Wrong Woman as an audiobook. As one who has spent three decades listening to audiobooks, I can tell you up front that I was a little nervous about Nevada Bob being the narrator of his own book. I say this because at least half or more of the audiobooks read by their authors come across less than great. (My favorite audiobook  reader, until now, has been Grover Gardner .) Nevada Bob has a distinctive baritone voice. It really resonates, which is why people enjoy his music. His story has a lot of emotional moments which no one could convey like Bob, who lived through them. Nevertheless, they did a short trial to be sure it would work. He was sensational.  Daryl Bolicek, owner/engineer at Wild Horse Studio, has three criteria for when it is O.K. for an author to read his or her own book. Bob satisfied all three.
