I, like many teens who came of age in the Sixties, was unaware of how many of the pop singles we listened to had their origins in black R&B. The things we've learned in retrospect could fill volumes. There's a whole chapter devoted to this in David Halberstam's  The Fifties .  The McCoys' two big hits in 1965 were "Hang On Sloopy" and "Fever." I never knew that the song Fever had been first recorded by Little Willie John. In fact, it had been a #1 hit on the R&B charts in 1956. Over a five year period Little Willie had 13 songs reach the Top Ten on the R&B charts. Maria of Sentir Cubano Calls Nevada Bob's Memoir the Story of a True American Hero

In the heart of Miami's Little Havana there's a wonderful little store named Sentir Cubano. When Nevada Bob Gordon was in Miami this fall he discovered this hidden gem on Calle 8, a store dedicated to Cuban culture.  Nevada Bob met owner Maria Vazquez they hit it off famously. Maria described him as a true American hero. " Bob is part of the culture we present here in the store. Hard working, successful, positive people....  He's like an All-American Cowboy... He's an amazing person. It's commendable when you are 83 and still going,"  Vazquez said. Maria and Miguel Vazquez opened the store in 2001. "It was time to create a store dedicated to Cuban culture," she said. Thus was born Sentir Cubano. Maria shared some of her own story. Frenchmen Art and Books: An Oasis In New Orleans

Frenchmen Art and Books is an independently owned and operated bookstore in New Orleans that now carries Nevada Bob Gordon's 50 Years with the Wrong Woman . The store can be found at 600 Frenchmen Street where it has been cultivating a following since 1978. If you check out their site you might find Delia Owens' Where the Crawdads Sing, which just happens to be a major motion picture that has been attracting audiences this summer. We're guessing that some day Nevada Bob's memoir will become a feature film. It's certainly worthy, a compelling story of resilience, with a mix of both action and humor A s its name proclaims,  Frenchmen Art and Books is more than a bookstore.
